    Description

Antique early 1900s stoneware mug / coffee cup souvenir of the "New Casino Belle Isle Park" in Detroit, Michigan. The first Belle Isle Casino opened in 1887. This mug shows an image of the second Belle Isle Casino (the "new" casino) that opened in 1907, at which time the old structure was demolished. This cup likely dates to a period shortly after the new casino was opened. Casino, in this sense, didn't indicate a gambling hall, but rather a pavilion that was used for civic events, meetings, and so forth.
The mug doesn't carry a maker's mark. Pewabic Pottery was founded in the area in 1903, so there's an outside chance the mug could have been crafted at Pewabic, but it doesn't look like their work. Mug stands about 4" tall, is about 3.375" in diameter at the base, and weighs about 14 ounces.
This mug is in Good Condition. There is minor paint loss to the gold on the rim of the cup. There are a couple of kiln defects on the handle - a kiln pop (small crack) at the bottom of the handle, some discoloration on the top of the handle (kiln ash?), and a small blob of clay on the middle of the handle. Overall cracquelure (network of fine cracks) consistent with age and kiln-firing.
